Modern Anesthesia Ventilators and the Pediatric Patient
نویسنده
چکیده
Mechanical ventilation of pediatric patients in the operating room can be challenging. Even small changes in delivered volume can be a significant percentage of the desired volume and lead to unintended hyperor hypoventilation. Due to the unique physiology of children, the consequences of these unintended ventilation changes can be hypoxemia, hypercarbia and/or barotrauma. When using a traditional anesthesia machine, fresh gas flow and circuit compliance both influence the volume delivered to the patient. Despite the sophistication of bedside monitoring technology, adequate ventilation of the pediatric patient continues to include subjective assessment of chest movement by the caregiver. Although clinical assessment is important, it is not very useful for assessing changes in ventilation when the patient is hidden under the surgical drapes. Modern anesthesia ventilators are designed to eliminate many factors which can influence delivered tidal volume that are inherent in traditional anesthesia machines. The following information will review the unique aspects of pediatric ventilation in the operating room, the limitations of traditional anesthesia machine technology and the features of modern anesthesia ventilators that address the limitations of traditional technology.

Mechanical ventilation of pediatric patients in the operating room can be challenging. Even small changes in delivered volume can be a significant percentage of the desired volume and lead to unintended hyperor hypoventilation, or even barotrauma. Modern anesthesia ventilators offer a selection of ventilation modes that approach the capabilities of an intensive care ventilator. Although the ICU...

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease resulting in destruction of the post-synaptic nicotinic receptors at the neuromuscular junction. Classically, the earliest symptoms of MG are ocular, including ptosis and diplopia. Other less common early symptoms include dysphagia and fatigable chewing. Our case report describes the unusual presentation of MG in a teenager patient and presented f...

BACKGROUND During the past few years, many manufacturers have introduced new modes of ventilation in anesthesia ventilators, especially partial-pressure modalities. The current bench test study was designed to compare triggering and pressurization of five new anesthesia ventilators with four intensive care unit ventilators. METHODS Ventilators were connected to a two-compartment lung model. O...

To the Editor:—I have concern about the article entitled “Performance Characteristics of Five New Anesthesia Ventilators and Four Intensive Care Ventilators in Pressure-support Mode: A Comparative Bench Study,” which appeared in the November 2006 issue of ANESTHESIOLOGY. Several statements made in the article are incorrect, and we appreciate an opportunity to set the record straight. In table 1...
